I used oatmeal, dried calendula, rose, and juniper berries.

Step 1: Gather equipment and ingredients

  • Eqipment: mixing bowl, spoon, measuring cup, blender, large muslin cloth bags
  • Ingredients:
    • Epsom salts
    • 2-4 dried herbs of choice – I used oatmeal, calendula, rose and juniper berries
    • 10-30 drops essential oil [optional] I used lavender!
    • Amounts: I used 1/3 cup of each herb and a 1:1 salt to herb ratio.
      • 1 and 1/3 cups total herb blend
      • 1 and 1/3 cups epsom salts.
    • Note: You can easily modify to increase or decrease yield, I just recommend using equal parts of each herb, and using equal parts epsom salts to total herb mixture.

Step 2: Add ingredients to blender.

Oatmeal, rose, calendula, juniper berries

Step 3: Pulse 3-5 times for a few seconds. Herbs shouldn’t be powdered, but blending them lightly opens the herbs.

Combining herb mix with equal parts epsom salts

Step 4: After lightly crushing herbs in blender, add equal parts epsom salts to bowl and blend with herb mix and stir to combine. For example: I used 1 and 1/3 cups epsom salts to 1 and 1/3 cup herbs. If adding essential oils, drip 10-30 drops into bowl and toss to combine.

Step 5: Spoon approx 1 cup of epsom salt herb blend into each bag. Tie drawstrings in a loop so bags can hang over faucets during a bath. Larger bags can fit closer to 2 cups, so you can vary your recipe to accomodate your bag size and desired yield. This recipe net 2 medium sized bath bags and 1 smaller bag I plan to use for a foot soak.

Directions:

Secure bath bag to bath faucet and allow hot water to run over the bag, infusing herbs and salts into the bathwater. Soak for 20-30 minutes, occassionally squeezing bag into water, to improve recovery and reduce stress.

Other great herbs to try:

  • Ginger
  • Lavender
  • Comfrey
  • Sage
  • Mint
  • Citrus Peel
